چکیده مقاله:

Objective- Current trends emphasize the acceleration of fracture healing on the ground that in doing so, the limitation of mobility and complications associated with recovery period are reduced. The present study aims to compare autogenic costal cartilage with Chitosan scaffold in canine humeral defect healing. Design- Experimental study Animal-15 adult male dogs Procedures- Dogs were divided into three groups of five. Humerus window shaped defect was created in their right hands. In the first group (controls), the defect was left untreated. In the second and third groups, Chitosan and autogenic costal cartilage were placed into the defects, respectively. Radiographs of the defects were prepared at weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 and finally the dogs were euthanized after 70 days. Histological sections were also obtained from the defect sites. Result-The results indicated that the costal cartilage alone treated group was inferior to both Chitosan treated and control groups, so cartilage does not seem to serve as a suitable alternative for grafting in canine bone defects. Conclusion and Clinical Relevance- Taking into account the results and other recent reports, it can be concluded that chitosan scaffolds with greater capabilities can be used in canine bone defect healing, however, for ideal bone tissue regeneration, chitosan as a base has to be combined with other materials including those mentioned above. The present study results showed that cartilage cannot serve as a proper alternative for grafting. Keywords: Autogenic Costal cartilage, Chitosan Scaffold, Bone Defect, Canine

Chitosan Scaffold for Wound Healing Application

-Chitosan is natural polysaccharide resembles with glycosaminoglycan of Extra Cellular matrix (ECM), which makes it a promising candidate for wound healing application apart from its excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study we have formulated various types of chitosan gel by dissolving different concentrations of chitosan powder in 100 ml of 2% acetic acid separately. Elec...

Concentric and eccentric carved costal cartilage: a comparison of warping.

OBJECTIVE To determine if a systematic, concentric graft-carving technique results in less warping than eccentric carving. METHODS Costal cartilage from ribs 3 through 9 were harvested from fresh human cadavers. Concentric dorsal grafts were carved from cartilage obtained from one side of the cadaver (n = 7) and eccentric grafts were carved from the opposite side (n = 11). After carving, graf...

Elastic cartilage grafting in canine radial fracture

Bone has a capability to repair itself when it is fractured. Repair involves the generation of intermediatetissues, such as fibrous connective tissue, cartilage and woven bone, before final bone healing can occur. Theprocess of cartilage-to-bone transition (CBT) is a key for the achievement of rigid bone healing duringfracture repair. We tested this potential for elastic cartilage using a long ...

Mechanical Characterization of Costal Cartilage

Rib fractures are a common morbidity following automotive crashes. While the rib bones are wellcharacterized, and articular cartilage from joints such as the knee and shoulder has been extensively mechanically characterized, almost no mechanical examination has been performed of the rib-cage costal cartilage. Costal cartilage is a hyaline cartilage, like articular cartilage, but it differs from...
